All of us at Peak Power are feeling optimistic this Earth Day. Governments around the world have made concrete commitments to improve their environmental – and social – impact. Here are some items we are thrilled about:

A Focus on Energy and Cleaning the Canadian Economy

The 2021 budget aims to support a green recovery to create jobs, build a clean economy, and fight and protect against climate change.

Highlights:

  • $17.6 billion towards a green recovery. This is on top of the $15 billion investment committed to via the Climate Plan released in December 2020
  • $2.3 billion over five years to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Parks Canada, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans

National Resources Canada’s Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program

NRCan created a new $964M program to support renewable energy, energy storage and grid modernization (Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways). This program is a monumental achievement for distributed energy resource (DER) adoption in Canada. It is also built upon a unique lens of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Clean energy funding in the 2021 US Budget Request

On March 31, President Biden released his administration’s $2 trillion plan for the nation’s infrastructure and job creation.

Highlights:

  • $400B towards energy efficiency and building upgrades
  • $174B in electric vehicle incentives
  • $100B towards renewing the electric grid and transitioning to clean energy
  • $81B towards advancing clean energy manufacturing and climate technology
  • To top it off, on Biden recently committed to slashing US emissions by 50% by 2030

EU Bringing Their Climate Commitments into Law

This one is not financial, but major because this is now a legal commitment for the entire EU to decarbonize. Considering the Peak staff couldn’t even agree on lunch orders pre-COVID, we admire the 27 member states for reaching this momentous agreement.

Highlights:

  • The law transitions EUs political commitment to Net Zero into a legal commitment for Europe
  • It strengthens the European framework for climate action by adding
    • a 2030 climate target of at least 55% reduction of net emissions as compared to 1990
    • a commitment to negative emissions after 2050
